Augustus B. Woodward was the dominant figure in the government of Michigan Territory prior to 1812. Educated at Columbia University and Virginia, by 1797 he was buying property in Washington, D.C. Woodward came to Detroit shortly after the devastating fire of 1805 and was appointed chief of the Michigan Territory's first three judges.
